The DaVinci Hack (Much Ado About Bullshit)

Some Indian Christians are so incensed with the fictional blockbuster "The Da Vinci Code" they want the government to ban it and one Roman Catholic has offered a bounty of US$25 000 on the head of author Dan Brown, leaving other members of the faithful embarrassed by the reaction.

If these people were as principled as they claim to be, they would have done the same for priests raping kids.

Hell, if these people had any standards, they'd be putting a bounty on Brown's head solely based on the fact that he's a piss-poor writer. They'd be paying to snuff out all the dumbass Brown fanatics who believe that his book has the slightest shred of truth to it, and when they're confronted with the fact that the book is located in the FICTION section, they smugly say "Well, it's an intriguing idea."

Yeah, so is impeaching Bush, but I don't see that rolling along any time soon. Also, you're a douche. Go read something interesting.

My main problem with this is that while many Christians will do their best to decry the actions of these people, yet many of them will fundamentally agree with it. As history, common sense, and the Joss Whedon fanbase have shown us, people don't like having their beliefs challenged.

Personally, I think that if your faith is so precarious that the slightest offensive element causes you to angrily decry any source of opposition, maybe you need to check your convictions and the constitution of your beiliefs.

But the fact that many hardcore Bible-thumpers will inevitably be talking out of both sides of their mouth in regards to this whole issue is more than enough to drive someone to insanity. It's one thing to be strong enough of a person to stand firm and not condone this kind of reactionary bullshit, but it's even worse to openly disagree with it while saying "You know, they've got the right idea" behind closed doors. Things like this just shouldn't happen, no matter what religion the perpetrators belong to. People should be pious enough to say, "You know what? It's just a stupid book/movie, and besides, someone should beat the shit out of whatever dorkus thought that it'd be okay to set up Tom Hanks with the worst hairdo since the beehive."

Honestly, the only difference I see between the behavior of Nicolas Almeida and that of Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson is that this potentially violent hypocrisy is coming from a country that has camels. Otherwise, it's all the same. It's all part of a deep-seated hatred of anything that's diametrically opposed to one's religious leanings, and taking umbrage with it instead of leaving it the fuck alone and dismissing it as something that's not worth the effort. Of course once they break out with the Armor of God, it's all over. Instead of doing the whole rationale bit and examining the opposition, looking at its weaknesses, and formulating a passable argument against it, they just relentlessly slam it and call for death and destruction.

If I was Jesus, I'd be pissed.
